The Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park is proposing the by-laws to tackle the impact of irresponsible camping. It would restrict camping in some of the park’s most popular beauty spots. Under the by-laws it would be an offence for people to pitch a tent or set up any form of shelter - including sleeping in a vehicle - within the restricted areas.
In the past, Murdo has held a public meeting in Highland Perthshire regarding problems of ‘wild’ camping by the lochs Rannoch and Tummel and the conduct of some groups who wild camp by the lochs’ shores.
Murdo Fraser MSP said:
“Lochs Tay, Rannoch and Tummel have some of the most idyllic and stunning scenery in Scotland and many people come here to due to the natural beauty of the area. A number of people come here to backpack and camp on the shores of the lochs. Whilst it is welcome to see people coming to the area and supporting the local economy, and whilst most do act responsibly, the actions of a minority cause concern to local residents.
“If the by-laws to stop informal camping taking place in parts of Loch Lomond are brought in, there is a fear that there will be a displacement and we will see more irresponsible campers come to Highland Perthshire instead. That is why Lochs Tay, Rannoch and Tummel require the same byelaws in order to protect the local environment and communities and Perth & Kinross Council must investigate this issue as a matter of urgency.
“At Loch Lomond, the rangers have to deal with remains of tents, burnt down trees, abandoned campfires and countless bags of rubbish on a weekly basis.
“It is important that responsible backpackers and campers are not affected by any by-laws. It is great to have people coming to Highland Perthshire and enjoying the magnificent views. It is only right that we protect the local environment and prevent irresponsible campers from damaging the area”
